"Shake It Off" - Taylor Swift
"Taylor Swift/NIN Mash-Up" - Nerdist [Which gave me the idea for this.]
"Autoclave" - John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats)
I really, truly think the Taylor Swift song here is kinda genius. It's just intelligently constructed pop that sticks in your brain far longer than the content has any right to.
Taylor is a supersmart marketing powerhouse, no sellout and no joke. She's singlehandedly guiding her own career, doing what she wants to do and slaying any competition with the deadly +5 vorpal broadsword of her skinny blonde likability.
Her connection and identification with her fans is beyond amazing - she freaking pays their student loans and goes to visit them at their houses - no, seriously, I'm too lazy to find the links, but Taylor Swift totally does stuff like this - frequently! Google it and you'll find countless examples.
Imagine if Metallica showed up at your front door with wine and cheese, or if U2 offered to pay off your mortgage!
That said, I found it fascinating to discover the other week that John Darnielle, the main force behind the prototypical lo-fi indie-folk band The Mountain Goats is a die-hard death metal fan.
Now, you are only supposed to like The Mountain Goats, basically, if you like, say, Dylan, and nothing else, because, words and acoustic guitar.
But as Darnielle points out, the death metal bands are the real and for-true artists, period, because, uber-complex guitar and pretty much 100% guarantee of negligible income and niche fame at best, not even a shot at a one-hit wonder.
So my writing goal (since I can't play a lick of music and writing is my art) is quite simply to be Taylor Swift doing death metal.
